What we do not do

There is no account system on TransitNation. There is nothing to sign up for, no newsletter gate and no login. We do not ask for your name, your email address or your date of birth, and we have no database of users because there are no users to have a database of.

We do not sell data to anyone, and we do not run behavioural advertising on this site.

What happens when you search

n

Search terms, an origin, a destination, dates, are passed to the partner search providers that return the results. They are used to answer the query. Where a search is handled by an embedded partner widget, the query is processed by that partner under their own privacy policy.

Cookies

Three kinds of cookie can be set while you use this site:

• Functional. Small preferences such as your chosen currency or the last search tab you used. These stay in your browser and are never transmitted anywhere.

• Analytics. Aggregate, non-identifying measurement of which pages are read and which searches are run, so we know which destination guides to write next.

• Affiliate tracking. This is the important one, and it is explained below.

How affiliate tracking works

When you click through from here to an airline, a hotel or a booking site, the partner network, usually Travelpayouts, sets a cookie in your browser recording that the visit originated from TransitNation. If you complete a booking within that cookie lifetime, the seller attributes the sale to us and pays a commission.

That cookie is set by the partner, not by us, and it lives on their domain under their privacy policy. It tells us that a booking happened; it does not tell us who you are. Our reporting shows anonymous, aggregated transactions, a route, a date, a commission amount, with no personal details attached.

If you clear cookies or use a browser that blocks third-party tracking, everything on this site keeps working normally. You will still get the same prices; we simply will not be paid for that booking. That is an acceptable trade and you should not feel obliged to change your browser settings on our account.

What the partners hold

Once you click through to a seller site you are on their platform, subject to their privacy policy and their cookie practices. Anything you type into their booking form, name, passport details, card number, is held by them. It never passes through TransitNation, because we have no checkout and no payment system of any kind.

Server logs

n

Like any website, this one sits behind a web server that keeps standard access logs: IP address, timestamp, page requested, browser user-agent. These are used to keep the site running and to spot abuse. They are retained for a short period and then discarded.

Your rights

Under the GDPR and comparable regimes you have the right to access, correct, export or erase personal data held about you, and to object to its processing. In practice we hold almost nothing that could identify you, so most requests resolve to there is nothing on file.

Where a partner network holds data relating to your click-through, that request has to be made to the network itself, it is their cookie and their record. Travelpayouts and each booking partner publish their own privacy policies and data-request procedures.

Children

This site is not directed at children and collects nothing knowingly from them.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, the date at the top of the page changes with it.
