Santorini, minus the queue.

Everyone comes for the same sunset. Almost nobody works out that the island has a second half, a black-sand coast, and a shoulder season where all of it costs 40% less.

The short version

A drowned volcano with a village on the rim.

Santorini is what remained after the caldera collapsed three and a half thousand years ago: a crescent of cliff five hundred feet above the water, with white villages balanced along the top edge of it.

The famous view runs from Fira to Oia along the north-west rim. The rest of the island , the wine country in the middle, the black volcanic beaches on the east coast, the ruins at Akrotiri , is quieter, cheaper, and where you will spend more of your time than the photographs suggest.

Where to stay

Four villages, four very different bills.

Oia

The most beautiful and the most expensive. Between six and eight in the evening it belongs to the tour buses; before and after, it is extraordinary.

Imerovigli

The same caldera view as Oia, twenty per cent cheaper, and quiet after dark. Twenty-five minutes on foot into Fira along the cliff path.

Perissa & Kamari

No caldera view, but a swimmable beach outside the door and a third of the price. Rent a scooter and you are on the rim in twenty minutes.

Worth the day

Six things that justify the flight.

01

The Fira to Oia cliff path

Ten kilometres along the rim, about three and a half hours. Start at seven in the morning from Fira and you will meet perhaps four people.

02

Akrotiri

A Bronze Age town buried by the eruption and dug out almost intact. Roofed, cool, and far less crowded than it deserves.

03

The caldera boat

Out to the volcano, the hot springs and Thirassia. Boat trips cost more at sunset, so take the morning one and watch the sunset from land.

04

Assyrtiko in the middle

Vines trained in low baskets against the wind, and a bone-dry white you will not find at home. Santo and Venetsanos both do proper tastings.

05

Red Beach and Vlychada

The volcanic coast. Vlychada wind-carved cliffs look like another planet and almost nobody photographs them.

06

Pyrgos at dusk

The old inland capital, up on the hill. You get the whole island from the castle ruins, and dinner costs half what it does on the rim.

Before you book

Santorini, answered.

Late April to mid-May, and the second half of October. The sea is cold in April and warm in October, so if swimming matters, take October. Flights and hotels both run roughly 40 to 50 per cent below the July peak.

You do not need a ticket to watch a sunset. You do need to arrive at the Oia castle ruins about ninety minutes early in summer, or skip it entirely and watch from Imerovigli, the Fira caldera bars, or the Pyrgos hilltop, all of which face the same sun.

Each village is. The island is not, it is eighteen kilometres end to end with serious hills. Buses all route through Fira, so a scooter, an ATV or a small car pays for itself on day one.

Santorini airport (JTR) sits behind Kamari, about ten minutes from Fira and twenty from Oia. Every taxi and most hotel transfers meet the arrivals hall.
